Incense is extracted by cutting the plants Boswellia Boswellia papyrifera namely, Boswellia Sacra or Carteri, Boswellia Serrata. The latter type is found mainly in India and surrounding areas, and is less valuable. Boswellia papyrifera grows primarily in Ethiopia, Boswellia Sacra is a native of Yemen, Oman and parts of Somalia. These two varieties of incense have many similarities and the only slight difference between the two about the scent of Boswellia Sacra who is more dry and less citrate.
